Chocolate Peanut Butter Blossoms

A rich chocolate version of the popular soft peanut butter blossom cookies we know and love.

What's in chocolate peanut butter blossom cookies?

I LOVE a soft, peanut butter blossom cookie. My sister mentioned one time that she didn’t love them because peanut butter based cookies weren’t her favorite. “Give me all the chocolate,” she said. The lightbulbs went off and I thought, ‘well you could make this a chocolate cookie!” and hence the chocolate version was born.

I tried a straight chocolate version without the peanut butter, but after many batches and lots of taste testers’s, it was agreed that the combo with the peanut butter in it was best. I will say, it doesn’t have a heavy peanut butter flavor. It’s primarily chocolate. The texture of the peanut butter kept it soft, and gave a nice underlying rich flavor. So if you’re not a HUGE peanut butter lover, don’t be scared. This cookie is still for you.

The other ingredients are super straight forward. All you need is some Hershey kisses to go on top. We love using the Dove hearts for Valentine’s day (which actually came recommendations from several you in our Instagram community! Thank you!!)

How to make chocolate peanut butter blossom cookies

These blossom cookies are very easy to make both right away or in advance!

1. Make the dough (you can chill it and save it for later, or bake right away)

2. Roll small balls in sugar
PRO TIP: Rolling the right size ball keeps a great ratio of cookie to chocolate. You don’t want them too big or too small. I’ve found that about 1 1/2 – 2 tbsp is a great size.)

3. Bake

4. Top with a Hershey kiss or Dove heart

Can't decide? Choose both!

If you love both the classic peanut butter blossom cookie and this new fun chocolate version, put both of them together! I tried this fun twist and it brought a little more peanut butter into the mix. So if this screams you, I absolutely recommend it!

Prep Time 30 minutes
Cook Time 10 minutes
Total Time 40 minutes
Servings 32 cookies

Ingredients

  • ½ cup unsalted butter
  • ¾ cup smooth peanut butter (not natural peanut butter)
  • ½ cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1 cup granulated sugar, divided
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • ½ cup (45 g) cocoa powder (I love using dutch processed)
  • 1 ⅓ cup (166 g) all purpose flour +/- 2 tbsp

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350° F. Prepare a cookie sheet and line with a silicone mat or parchment paper.
  • Using a hand or stand mixer, cream together softened butter and peanut butter until blended and smooth. Add the 1/2 cup granulated sugar and brown sugar. Mix again until combined.
  • Add vanilla and egg. Mix again. Add flour and cocoa powder (don't pack - weigh or spoon & level), salt, and baking soda. Mix until just combine. Do not over mix cookie dough. If the dough still seems pretty sticky, add a 1-3 more tbsp of flour as needed.
  • Using a small standard cookie scoop (2 TB), scoop balls of cookie dough and roll in a bowl of granulated sugar. 12 cookie dough balls fit on a standard half sheet pan.
  • If dough seem pretty soft from handling I recommend chilling for about 10 minutes to prevent the cookies from over spreading.
  • Bake for about 10 minutes until cookies are no longer shiny. While baking, unwrap Hershey's kisses (or dove hearts!) - one for each cookie. Remove cookies from oven and immediately press a chocolate kiss into the center of each cookie. Store in an airtight container for up to one week, or freezer for up to 3 months.
